One Picture
This is the only picture I have from the wedding so far. Turns out that the responsibilities of Maid of Honour don't leave much time for photography. I'll post more when I get them. Thanks Aunt Sue!
Lisa & Eric
The wedding has come and gone and I finally have time to return to ‘The Land of the Bloggers’.
Lisa and Eric were engaged for a little less than a year. I remember, when Eric called and told me that he was going to propose and that he wanted me to help him pick the ring, I nearly threw-up because I was so excited!
I guess at the time I never actually realized what their marriage would mean to me, or how it would change my life. I was just excited for both of them. I still am!
The wedding drew nearer and nearer, and with every passing day, I became more anxious about the ‘impending doom’ of losing my sister, and more importantly, my best friend, to her HUSBAND! Eventually, this all came out in a tear-filled and heart-felt speech to the bride and groom at their rehearsal dinner.
And now, for your reading pleasure, I present to you the Maid of Honour’s Speech:
My big sister is getting married tomorrow… Wow! That is so cool!
I have so many memories of Lisa; some good, some bad.
I remember being in sixth grade, my ‘boyfriend’ made me a mix tape of meatloaf songs. Lisa and I listened to ‘I Would do Anything for Love’ about 600 times in the first week.
~ At this point I’d like to remind our parents that we do not live with you any more. We’re adults and you can not punish us~
I think it was when I was about twelve, the summer before we moved to the farm. Lisa started sneaking out. Lisa and I shared a room; so in order for her to sneak out, she needed me as her accomplice. I played along for a while. One time Mom found the screen for our window ‘hidden’ in our closet. She asked me why it was there. I told her it had simply ‘fallen out’. However, it didn’t take long for me to figure out that I could use this ‘accomplice’ business to my advantage. Blackmail – I believe that’s the appropriate term. Soon, I was sneaking out with Lisa.
Now, I could tell you that I snuck out for the thrill, or just so that I could brag about it at school, but the bottom line was that I thought my sister was cool; and I wanted to be cool with her.
I have called Lisa a lot of things over the last twenty-three years, but I don’t think I’ve ever told her that she is a genuinely cool person. Lisa, you are my very best friend. I admire you. I respect you. You are so beautiful. And I love you so much more than words can say.
Over the last few months and weeks, Lisa has endured my nagging, my wedding ‘suggestions’ and most recently my “are you sures” and my “there’s still time to back-outs”.
Eric, you are the most perfect addition to our family. So, it’s fitting that tomorrow you will become my brother – even if it is only by-law. Please know that you are welcomed, with open arms and open hearts, and you are loved. Nevertheless, you are taking my sister. My best friend will no longer be mine; she will be yours. Protect her, cherish her, appreciate everything about her, and love her in a way that you have never even dreamed possible; because she deserves that, and so much more.
I love you both very much. I am very thankful that God has brought you together. I am also grateful that you have invited me to play such an important role in your day. May the Lord keep you, and bless you with every good thing this world has to offer; as well as an eternity with Him.
